Developing a Thesis Statement

In the process of doing the research to answer your question, you will begin to have opinions about the subject. You use these opinions to develop you thesis statement. Good term papers are not wishy-washy. Don't be afraid to take a stand. Observe the difference between the following statements:

Weak thesis statement: There are many things that can be done to reduce the inequities in international long distance accoutning practices.

Strong thesis statement: Policies that lead to a dramatic reduction in of existing regulatory barriers will have the greatest impact on the problem of international long distance pricing inequities.

Once you develop a thesis statement, your research will concentrate on finding information to support your statement. The thesis statement will be incorporated into your paper's introduction, and the main body of your paper will present evidence to suppor t your thesis. Your thesis statement, however, is NOT WRITTEN IN STONE; it may change as your research unveils new evidence. For instance, in further researching international telecommunications regulation, the writer of the above thesis statement might find that other types of policies would have a greater impact on reducing pricing inequalities. The thesis statement would then be changed to reflect this new information.

A clear, strong, well-focused thesis statement is the foundation of a clear, strong, well-focused term paper. This is an important step. Be sure to take the time to do it well.
